Write down how many classmates like each fruit and you get a table; turn those counts into bars and you get a graph. A graph shows which one has the most and least at a glance. Change the number of students for each fruit and watch the table and bar graph update.

Example 1

In a favorite-fruit survey, 8 chose strawberry, 5 grape, 10 apple, and 7 banana. How many students took part in all?

Add up the number of students for each fruit.

8 + 5 + 10 + 7 = 30 students.

▸ 30 students

A table total is the sum of all the item counts.

Example 2

In the survey above, what is the difference between the most and least chosen fruit?

The most is apple with 10, the least is grape with 5.

The difference is 10 − 5 = 5.

Comparing the longest and shortest bars on a graph gives the difference.
