A time is the moment the clock shows; a duration is how much has passed. The short hand points to the hour and the long hand to the minutes, and AM or PM shows where you are in the day. A day is 24 hours and an hour is 60 minutes, and 1 week is 7 days and 1 year is 12 months. Move both hands to read a time, then add a duration to a fixed start (8:30) to see when it ends.

Examples and Unit Test

Example 1

How many minutes are in 2 hours?

1 hour = 60 minutes.

2 hours = 60 min + 60 min = 120 min.

▸ 120 minutes

To convert hours to minutes, count 60 minutes per hour.

Example 2

Class starts at 8:30 and lasts 45 minutes. What time does it end?

Add the 45 minutes of duration to the start time 8:30.

30 min + 45 min = 75 min = 1 h 15 min. So 8:30 + 45 min = 9:15.

End time = start time + duration.

Unit Test

If the long hand points to 6 and the short hand is between 3 and 4, what time is it?

①3:00

②3:30

③4:30

④6:30

▸ ② 3:30

The long hand on 6 means 30 minutes.

The short hand has just passed 3, so it is 3:30.
