Pattern Finding

Pattern Finding

A pattern is when colors, shapes, or numbers repeat in a set order or grow by the same amount each time. Red, blue, red, blue keeps alternating, and 2, 4, 6, 8 goes up by two, so once you spot the rule you can tell what comes next. Here you can change the numbers and shapes yourself and watch the hidden pattern appear, even inside the times tables.

What is a Pattern?
🔄 Repetition = Pattern!
①Red, blue, red, blue → repeats!
②1, 3, 5, 7 → +2 each!
③Find rule → predict the next

🔢 Number Sequence Rules
①2 → +3, +3, +3...
②2, 5, 8, ...
③+3

🎨 Secret of Shape Patterns
①Shapes repeat regularly
②Find the repeating unit
③Predict the next shape
Patterns in Times Tables

Times Tables Have Patterns Too!
①3 × 1, 3 × 2, 3 × 3...
②+3, +3, +3...
③3, 6, 9, 12, ...
Summary
Number Rule
previous + fixed step = next
Adding a fixed amount = sequence rule
Shape Rule
Find repeating unit → predict next shape
Shapes repeat in same order
Times-Table Rule
N's table: N, 2N, 3N, ... (+N each)
Times tables also have rules
🎯 Remember!
①Pattern = repeats or changes regularly
②Growing/shrinking by a constant in sequence
③Shape pattern: find the repeating unit
④Times tables have many patterns
⑤Find patterns in daily life! (lights, weekdays, seasons)
Examples and Unit Test
Example 1
What number comes next: 3, 7, 11, 15?
1
Look at the differences: 7 − 3 = 4, 11 − 7 = 4. The rule is +4 each step.
2
15 + 4 = 19.
19
For number sequences, find the rule of growing or shrinking by a constant.
Example 2
Circle, circle, triangle repeats. What shape is in the 8th position?
1
The repeating unit is (circle, circle, triangle), 3 shapes long.
2
8 ÷ 3 = 2 remainder 2, so the 8th is the 2nd of the unit: a circle.
Circle
The remainder after dividing by the unit length tells you which shape it is.
Unit Test
In the rule 2, 4, 6, 8, ... growing by 2, what comes after 10?
11
12
14
20
② 12
1
The rule grows by 2 each step.
2
10 + 2 = 12.
