grade 1 Pattern Rules

Pattern Rules

A pattern is color, shape, or numbers that repeat in a set order. Red, blue, red, blue repeats, and 2, 4, 6, 8 grows by the same step each time. Patterns hide everywhere, in traffic lights, seasons, and weekdays. Change the pattern type to see how colors and shapes repeat, then move the start and the step to predict the next number.

What is a Pattern?

🔄 Patterns are Things that Repeat
①Red, blue, red, blue... → repeat!
②Sun rises and sets, again... → repeat!
③Find the pattern → predict what is next

Color Patterns

Yellow-Blue
🎨 Let's Find Patterns
①Can you see what repeats?
②A cycle is the chunk that returns to the first shape. Circle-triangle-circle-triangle has a cycle of 2
③How many in each cycle?
④Predict what comes next!
⑤Change the pattern and observe

Number Patterns

3
🔢 Numbers Have Patterns Too
①2, 4, 6, 8 → adds 2 each time
②1, 4, 7, 10 → adds 3 each time
③Find the rule → guess the next number!
④Try different start and step values

Patterns in Daily Life

🌈 Where are Patterns Hiding?
①Traffic lights: green → yellow → red → green...
②Seasons: spring → summer → fall → winter → spring...
③Weekdays: Mon → Tue → Wed → Thu → Fri → Sat → Sun...
④Train your eyes to spot patterns!

Summary

What is a Pattern
Something that repeats
Colors, shapes, and numbers can all have patterns
Number Pattern
2, 4, 6, 8, ... → +2 each step
Adding the same number makes it grow. Example: 2, 4, 6, 8 (plus 2 each time)
Using Patterns
Find rule → predict what is next!
Patterns help fill in the blanks
🎯 Remember!
①Pattern = something that repeats
②Find patterns in colors, shapes, numbers
③Knowing the rule lets you predict next
④Patterns are everywhere in life
⑤Grade 1 Math complete! Great job!

Examples and Unit Test

Example 1
Red, blue, red, blue, red. What color comes next?
1
The rule is red and blue alternating.
2
Blue always follows red, so the next color is blue.
Blue
Find the repeating unit and you can tell what comes next.
Example 2
What number comes next: 2, 4, 6, 8?
1
The rule increases by 2 each time (2 → 4 → 6 → 8, +2 each step).
2
Adding 2 to 8 gives 10, so the next number is 10.
10
In a steadily increasing pattern, you keep adding the same number.
Unit Test
Triangle, circle, triangle, circle, triangle. What shape comes next?
triangle
circle
square
star
② circle
1
The rule is triangle and circle alternating.
2
A circle follows a triangle, so the next shape is a circle.
