Comparing

Comparing

Comparing means deciding which of two things is longer, heavier, or greater in number. You do it when you line up two pencils or lift two bags to see which weighs more. For length you line up one end; for weight, the seesaw side that dips is heavier. Here you slide the lengths and counts and watch how 7 > 4 shows which side is bigger.

What is Comparing?
⚖️ Looking at Two Things Side by Side
①Which is longer or shorter
②Which is heavier or lighter
③Which is wider or narrower
④Comparing shows the difference!
Comparing Length
7 cells
4 cells
📏 Comparing Length
①Line up one end before comparing
②The one sticking out further is "longer"
③Same length = "equal"
④Compare pencils, ribbons, jump ropes
Comparing Weight
5
3
⚖️ Comparing Weight
①Put on a seesaw to compare
②The side that goes down is "heavier"
③The side that goes up is "lighter"
④If level → "same weight"
Other Comparisons
🔎 Other Things You Can Compare
①Area: wider / narrower
②Capacity: more / less
③Height: taller / shorter
④Side by side makes comparing easy
Summary
Length Comparison
longer / shorter / equal
Line up one end before comparing
Weight Comparison
heavier / lighter / equal
Use a seesaw or scale
Area Comparison
wider / narrower / equal
Overlap to see which is wider
🎯 Remember!
①Align the reference (one end matched) when comparing
②You can compare length, weight, area, capacity
③Use bigger, smaller, equal
④Practice comparing in daily life!
⑤Next is finding patterns!
Examples and Unit Test
Example 1
A yellow pencil is 7 cells long and a blue pencil is 4 cells long. Which pencil is longer?
1
Line up one end of both pencils and compare the number of cells.
2
Since 7 cells is longer than 4 cells (7 > 4), the yellow pencil is longer.
The yellow pencil (7 cells > 4 cells)
Line up one end; the one that sticks out further is longer.
Example 2
Blocks are placed on both sides of a seesaw. The left side goes down and the right side goes up. Which side is heavier?
1
On a seesaw, the heavier side goes down.
2
The left side went down, so the left side is heavier.
The left side (the one that went down)
On a seesaw, the heavier side drops and the lighter side rises.
Unit Test
There are 8 strawberries and 5 tangerines. Which has more?
strawberries
tangerines
they are equal
cannot tell
① strawberries
1
Compare the two numbers, 8 and 5.
2
Since 8 > 5, there are more strawberries.
