Linear Inequalities

An inequality swaps the equals sign for <, >, ≤, or ≥ to compare two quantities. An equation has one answer, but an inequality is met by a whole range of numbers, like every height tall enough to ride. Here you shade that range on a number line and watch the sign flip when you multiply both sides by a negative.

Steps
Expand brackets → move terms → combine like terms → divide by coefficient
Same as solving a linear equation, but flip when dividing by a negative

Example 1
Solve the inequality 2x − 3 > 5.

Dividing by a positive number keeps the inequality direction.
