Proto-Germanic '*draumaz' (dream, joy)
Proto-Germanic *draumaz → Old English drēam (originally 'joy, music') → Middle English dremen (to dream)
In a word

Curiously, Old English drēam first meant "joy, music". The sleep-images had a different word entirely. How the two senses merged in Middle English is still debated among scholars. A small mystery lives inside the modern word "dream".
