週末 shuumatsu — 週 (week) + 末 (end) = "weekend". Build with 今/先/来 + 週末: 今週末 (this), 先週末 (last), 来週末 (next). The kanji 末 ("end") also appears in 月末 getsumatsu (month-end), 年末 nenmatsu (year-end). The hypothetical 週初 (week-start) is rare; people just say 月曜日.
