Mnemonic

覚える oboeru — ichidan. Two senses: ① memorize/commit to memory (action) ② remember/retain — but for the state "to remember" use 覚えている (~ている needed). Opposite: 忘れる wasureru. Distinct from 思い出す omoidasu (recall, pull memory back). Same ~ている asymmetry as 知る.
