Mnemonic

Kawaru (変わる) is a godan intransitive — "to change." Transitive partner: kaeru (変える, ichidan). Jidai ga kawaru (the era changes) vs jidai o kaeru (change the era). Homophonous kanji: 替わる kawaru (be replaced, same-kind swap), 代わる kawaru (substitute, role replacement). Same sound, kanji disambiguates. Seiken ga koutai suru (regime change) uses 替, "chichi no kawari ni iku" (go in father's place) uses 代, general change uses 変. Frequent: aikawarazu (as always), kawarimono (eccentric, noun). Korean four-tier "ba-kki-da / byeon-ha-da / gyo-che-doe-da / dae-sin-ha-da" parallels.
