日 rì "day" + 益 yì "to increase": day by day increasing, i.e. increasingly (an adverb). Followed by an adjective/verb: "to grow more and more ~" (日益严重, increasingly serious). The 益 is in 利益 (benefit) and 有益. Distinguish 日益 (literary "increasingly") from 越来越 (yuèláiyuè, colloquial "more and more").
