其 qí "that, its" + 余 yú "to remain": that which remains, i.e. the rest, the remainder (excluding what was mentioned). The 余 is in 余下 (to be left) and 剩余 (surplus). Distinguish 其余 (the rest aside from what was named) from 剩下 (shèngxià, what is left over after use). Used as noun/attributive (其余的人).
