潜 qián "submerged, hidden" + 力 lì "power, force": hidden power lying submerged, i.e. potential. It corresponds to the Korean word jam-jae-ryeok (潛在力). The hidden force or possibility a person, market or thing has to perform or grow (发展潜力 growth potential, 潜力巨大 huge potential). Nearly the same as 潜能, but 潜力 leans toward growth potential and is common for markets and economies (市场潜力). 力 means "power, force" (动力, 实力).
