领 lǐng "to govern" + 域 yù "territory": a Sino-Korean word "field, domain". A bounded zone (域) under one’s sway (领), i.e. a particular field or scope. 研究领域 (research field), 科技领域 (the tech field). Broader and more abstract than 学科 (a defined discipline), it can denote any scope of activity or knowledge. Akin to 范围 (scope).
