领 lǐng "to lead, hold" + 土 tǔ "earth, land": the land a nation holds, i.e. territory. Same as the Korean word yeong-to (領土). The land or domain over which a nation’s sovereignty extends (国家领土 national territory, 领土完整 territorial integrity). A core political and legal term paired with 主权 (sovereignty): if 主权 is the right, 領土 is the space that right covers. 领 means "to lead, hold" (领导, 领域); 土 means "earth, land" (土地, 国土).
