经济 "economy" + 学 "study, -ology": the study of the economy, i.e. economics. Same as the Korean word gyeong-je-hak (經濟學). The discipline dealing with economic phenomena: the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services (微观经济学 microeconomics, 宏观经济学 macroeconomics). 学 is the suffix "-ology" forming academic fields (数学 math, 哲学 philosophy). 经济 derives from "governing the world and aiding the people". 经济学家 means an economist.
