境 jìng "boundary, territory" + 界 jiè "boundary": both "boundary", i.e. literally a boundary, but more often figuratively a "realm, level (attained)" (思想境界, a level of thought). The 境 is in 环境 and 边境. The 界 is in 世界 and 边界. Distinguish 境界 (an attained realm/level, abstract) from 边界 (biānjiè, a concrete border).
