边 biān "edge, side" + 境 jìng "boundary, region": the boundary at a nation’s edge, i.e. the border, the frontier. Korean renders it as "border, frontier". The boundary region where one country meets a neighbor (边境线 the border line, 边境地区 the border area). 边 means "edge, side" (旁边, 边缘); 境 means "boundary, situation" (国境, 环境). It overlaps with 国界 (border line) but 边境 also strongly means the border region itself.
