Mnemonic
辩 biàn "to argue, dispute" + 护 hù "to protect": to protect by argument, i.e. to defend, to plead for. Same as the Korean word byeon-ho (辯護). Arguing on behalf of the accused in court, or generally speaking up to defend someone or something (辩护律师 a defense lawyer, 为自己辩护 to defend oneself). The counterpart to 起诉 (prosecution) in a trial. 辩 means "to argue" (辩论, 争辩); 护 means "to protect" (保护, 维护). The same 辩 as in 辩论 (debate).
