grade 2 Magnets Play

Magnets Play

A magnet pulls iron toward it with a special force. Iron things like clips and nails stick firmly, but paper, wood, and plastic do not. Every magnet has an N pole and an S pole: opposite poles attract, like poles push apart. Slide the two magnets closer or farther and the pull grows stronger.

🧲 Secret of Magnets
①Every magnet has N and S poles
②N + S → attract!
③Same poles pushing apart is not shown in this picture
④Closer = stronger

Sticks or Not?

🔩 Sticks to Magnets!
①Iron (nails, clips, scissors)
②Iron filings, fridge door
③Things that contain iron
④Most metals containing iron!
🚫 Does NOT Stick!
①Wood
②Plastic
③Paper
④Glass
⑤Aluminum (can material — does not stick!)

Where are Magnets Used?

🏠 Magnets in Daily Life
①Fridge door — magnets seal it
②Bag clasps
③Smartphones have small magnets
④Compass — magnet always points north!

Summary

🎯 Magnets Play Summary
①Magnets have N and S poles
②Different poles attract. Same poles pushing apart is not shown here
③Closer = stronger
④This page focuses on iron. Nickel and cobalt are on Magnets and Magnetic Force
⑤Used everywhere — compass, fridge, etc!

Examples and Unit Test

Example 1
What happens when you face the N pole and S pole of magnets together? What about the same poles?
1
When an N pole and an S pole (different poles) meet, they pull toward each other.
2
When N and N, or S and S (the same poles) meet, they push each other away.
Different poles = attract / same poles = repel
The closer the magnets, the stronger the pull or push.
Example 2
Among a nail, a wooden stick, and a plastic cup, which one sticks to a magnet?
1
A magnet sticks to objects that contain iron.
2
A nail is made of iron so it sticks, but wood and plastic do not.
The nail (made of iron, so it sticks to a magnet)
Wood, plastic, paper, and glass do not stick to a magnet.
Unit Test
Which object sticks to a magnet?
A wooden stick
An iron clip
A plastic cup
Paper
A glass cup
② An iron clip
1
A magnet sticks to objects that contain iron.
2
An iron clip sticks, but wood, plastic, paper, and glass do not.
