Decimal Multiplication & Division
Multiplying decimals means multiplying as if the numbers were whole and then placing the point by the sum of the decimal places. A rectangle 1.5 meters by 1.2 meters has area 1.80 m², and 1.80 is the same as 1.8; 0.3 times 0.4 is 0.12, which is also an area. Dividing shifts both points equally into a whole-number division, just as a 2.4 meter ribbon cut into 0.6 meter pieces gives 4. Slide the two numbers and the area model, the number line, and the length bars build each step.
