Fraction Addition & Subtraction

When two fractions share a denominator, adding and subtracting stay simple. You keep that denominator and only add or subtract the numerators. Cut a cake into 6 slices, eat 2 and let a friend eat 3, and 2/6 plus 3/6 is 5/6. The denominator is the size of a slice, so do not add those bottoms; switch add and subtract and the bars and the equation show each step.

💡 Rule for Same-Denominator Fractions
①Same denominator: add or subtract only the numerators. In the formula, a and b are numerators, c is the denominator
②Never add or subtract denominators!
③Simplifying means dividing numerator and denominator by the same number. Example: 2/4 = 1/2
