아라비아 al-kuḥl = '그 콜(눈 화장용 분말)'. 중세 연금술사들이 분말이든 액체든 '극도로 정제된 것'을 모두 alcohol이라 불렀다. 그러다 16-17세기에 의미가 좁아져 '증류된 정수' = 술의 정수 = 알코올이 됐다. 'al-'은 아라비아어의 정관사 — algebra, algorithm, alkali에도 같은 'al-'이 살아있다.
