Several parts combine into one character.

予 is read variously as a weaving shuttle pushed side to side, or pushing a thing to "give." It is widely used for "beforehand, in advance," in which case it originally stood in as an abbreviation for 豫 (beforehand, a character containing 象, elephant).

The form splits. Japanese shinjitai (ja) and Chinese simplified (zh) write 予 even for "beforehand," but Korean and traditional contexts use 豫 for that sense, and Chinese writes "beforehand" as 预 (yù, with 頁). So the writing of "beforehand" splits by mode into 予 / 豫 / 预.

Korean hanja-sound "ye": 豫測 (yecheuk, prediction), 豫定 (yejeong, schedule), 豫想 (yesang, expectation), 豫防 (yebang, prevention), 豫約 (yeyak, reservation), 豫算 (yesan, budget). Korea mainly uses 豫 for "beforehand."

Mandarin writes "beforehand" as 预, yù, 4th tone — 预测 (yùcè, to predict), 预定 (yùdìng, to schedule), 预报 (yùbào, forecast), 预约 (yùyuē, to reserve). 予 itself is also yǔ (3rd, to give) and yú (2nd, I) — 给予 (jǐyǔ, to give).

Japanese: on-reading ヨ (yo), kun あらかじ.め (arakajime). 予定 (yotei, schedule), 予約 (yoyaku, reservation), 予想 (yosō, expectation), 予報 (yohō, forecast), 予防 (yobō, prevention), 予め (arakajime, beforehand). Used daily as 予定 (yotei) and 予約 (yoyaku).
