record
/ˈrekɔːrd/·레코드·noun, verb
a written or audio account; to capture for later
LatinCEFR A2
Root
re- (back, again) + Latin 'cor' (heart)
Latin recordari (call to mind, lit. 'bring back to the heart') → Old French recorder → Middle English recorden
In a word
re- (back) + cor (heart) = literally 'bring back to the heart'. The ancients thought memorising happened in the heart, not the head. So remembering and writing things down took one verb. Recording, records, world records — all descendants of that "back-to-heart". Hitting the record button is, etymologically, pressing Latin.
Examples
The teacher records every student's progress.
She set a new world record.
I want to record this song on my phone.
