psychology
/saɪˈkɒlədʒi/·사이콜로지·noun
the study of the mind
GreekCEFR A2
Root
psycho- (soul, mind) + Greek 'logos' (study)
Greek psychē (soul) + -logia (study) → German Psychologie (16th c.) → English psychology
In a word
psych (soul, breath) + -logy (study, word) = 'study of the soul'. To the Greeks, psyche meant breath, soul, and mind all at once. When breath stopped, the soul left — so the three lived in one word. In modern usage, psychology narrows that "breath-soul" down to mind. Etymologically, the field has a poetic name: "the study of breathing".
