philosophy

/fɪˈlɒsəfi/·필로소피·noun
the study of fundamental questions of existence
GreekCEFR B1
Root
philo- (loving) + Greek 'sophia' (wisdom)
Greek philosophia (love of wisdom) → Latin philosophia → Old French philosophie → English philosophy
In a word

philo (loving) + sophia (wisdom) = 'the love of wisdom'. Pythagoras reportedly called himself not a wise man (sophos) but a lover of wisdom (philosophos), and the discipline took that humility as its name. Philosophy is, from birth, a love of asking — not a possession of answers. The same philo lives in philanthropy (loving humanity); sophia lives on (oddly) in sophomore.
