/ˈloʊkeɪt/·로케이트·verb
to find or set in a place
LatinCEFR B1
Root
Latin 'locus' (place) + -ate (verb)
Latin locare (to place) → English locate (16th c.)
In a word
Latin locus = 'place'. The loc family splits by where you put — loc-ate (set in a place), loc-al (of that place), al-loc-ate (give to one), re-loc-ate (place again). The "l" in GPS is, by descent, the Latin locus. When a map app drops a pin, a 2,000-year-old root is doing the work.
