the rules of how words combine
GreekCEFR A2
Root
Greek 'gramma' (letter)
Greek grammatikē tekhnē (the art of letters) → Latin grammatica → Old French gramaire → English grammar
In a word
Greek gramma = 'letter'. The "art of letters" (grammatikē tekhnē) became grammar. The same gram lives in diagram (drawn across), telegram (letter sent far), monogram (one letter combined into a mark). "Program" is family too — by root, "written beforehand." Learning grammar is, etymologically, learning the craft of letters.
