/ɪər/·이어·noun
the organ of hearing
Old EnglishCEFR A1
Root
Proto-Indo-European '*h2ows-' (ear)
PIE *h2ows- → Proto-Germanic *ausō → Old English ēare → Modern ear
In a word

PIE *h2ows-. The same root branched into English ear, German Ohr, and Latin auris (the root of auditory). One of the body's smallest words has carried five thousand years — alive at once in Latin scholarship and in English daily speech. The gesture toward an ear has likely predated humanity itself; the word has barely moved either.
