LatinCEFR A2
Root
de- (down) + Latin 'pendere' (to hang)
Latin dependere (hang down from) → Middle French dépendre → English depend (15th c.)
In a word
de- (down) + pend (hang) = 'to hang down from'. The pend family splits by mode of hanging — de-pend (hang from = rely on), pend-ant (a thing that hangs), pend-ulum (a hanging swinger), sus-pens-e (hanging from below = tension). Movie "suspense," by root, is "the audience left hanging." The abstract idea of dependence began as the physical act of hanging.
