biology
/baɪˈɒlədʒi/·바이올로지·noun
the study of living things
GreekCEFR A2
Root
bio- (life) + Greek 'logos' (study, discourse)
Greek bios (life) + -logia (study) → German Biologie (1802, coined by Treviranus and Lamarck) → English biology
In a word
bio (life) + -logy (study) = 'the study of life'. Around 1802, Lamarck and Treviranus coined the same word independently — without knowing each other, they assembled identical Greek parts. The word was, in a sense, calling out to its era. The same -logy still labels sociology, psychology, geology.
