休む yasumu — a godan -mu verb; one word forks into two paths. One is rest — the laying down of the body for a while, the other is absence — leaving school or work briefly empty. Hardened into a noun it is 休み, the 休 of 夏休み and 冬休み. Kanji-reading kin: 休 reads Korean 'hyu' (休息), Mandarin xiū.
