Mnemonic

Yama — 山, mountain. The sound is Yamato, separate from the kanji's Sino reading. The kanji 山 itself is three peaks drawn — meet it again in Mandarin Roots. The Sino reading "san" appears in 富士山 (Fuji-san) — that -san is "mountain", not the honorific. Same kanji as Korean "san," same meaning.

Quick check

  1. What does the -san in 富士山 (Mt. Fuji) mean?
