Mnemonic

焼ける yakeru — kanji 焼 + the ichidan ending ける. Intransitive: bread or meat gets grilled on its own, or something burns. Subject marked by が. Its transitive partner is the P4 anchor 焼く (yaku). 日に焼ける (to get sunburned/tanned) is common — the cause takes に. 焼く ↔ 焼ける is the ~ku transitive / ~keru intransitive pattern.
