Collocations

つまらない (tsumaranai, boring / trivial)面白い (omoshiroi, interesting — antonym)つまらないもの (tsumaranai mono, "trifling thing" — gift humility)くだらない (kudaranai, silly / nonsense)退屈 (taikutsu, boredom — na-adj noun)

Mnemonic

tsumaranai — the negative of 詰まる (tsumaru, to fill): "not filled, hollow inside." Pleasure that never fills the cup is dull; value that never fills it is trifling. "Tsumaranai mono desu ga, douzo" lowers one's own gift in ritual humility, and the receiver never agrees — "sonna koto nai desu yo," they push back. Kanji-reading kin: 詰 surfaces as Korean 'hil' (詰問), Mandarin jié.
