通る tooru — from 通 (to pass through): the movement radical 辶 with 用 — a road that runs through without blocking, to pass along. It is intransitive; though it takes を, that marks the path traversed (道を通る). Figuratively, 試験に通る = to pass an exam. The on-yomi つう appears in 交通 (traffic) and 普通 (ordinary).
