Mnemonic

とぶ — 飛ぶ, Yamato. A godan -bu verb. One word holds two shades ── to fly: 鳥が飛ぶ (a bird flies), 飛行機が飛ぶ (a plane flies). to leap: 高く飛ぶ (jump high). Where Korean splits 'fly' and 'jump', Japanese lets 飛ぶ hold the whole act of rising into the air. The te-form is 飛んで ── the godan rule turning -bu into -nde. 遊ぶ → 遊んで, 飲む → 飲んで, 死ぬ → 死んで ── -bu, -mu, -nu all converge on -nde. A phonological family the conjugation table teaches. In the onyomi ひ hi ── 飛行機 hikouki (airplane, the Meiji coinage seen in K-27-D). 飛 is the first character of that word. The Korean reading bi is sister to the onyomi ひ.
