Mnemonic

たつ — 立つ, Yamato. A godan -tsu verb. Intransitive. The kanji 立 is a pictograph: a person standing on the ground — 大 (person) above 一 (earth). Intransitive and transitive split cleanly — intransitive 立つ tatsu: the subject stands ── 駅の前に立つ (stand in front of the station). transitive 立てる tateru: to stand something up ── 看板を立てる (put up a sign). The state is ~ている: 立っている (is standing). In the onyomi りつ ritsu, the meaning expands from 'stand' to 'establish' ── 建物 tatemono (building, 'a stood-up thing'), 成立 seiritsu (formation), 国立 kokuritsu (national, 'set up by the country'), 立場 tachiba (one's standing = position). The Korean readings rip / ipjang are sister to the onyomi りつ.
