叱る shikaru — from 叱 (to scold): the mouth radical 口 with 匕 (a dagger) — to reprove sharply with words. It is the opposite of 褒める (to praise). Compare 怒る (okoru, to get angry, K-67): 叱る is reproving to correct a fault, while 怒る is an outburst of emotion. The passive 叱られる is common.
