Collocations

来年 (rainen, next year)来年の (rainen no, next year's)来年度 (rainendo, next fiscal year)再来年 (sarainen, year after next)来年もよろしく (rainen mo yoroshiku, year-end farewell)

Mnemonic

来年 rainen — 来 (to come) + 年 (year): the coming year = next year, parallel in a row with 来週 and 来月. Japan's workplaces and government offices stand on a fiscal year that opens anew each April. So when someone says 来年度 in November, that means the year starting next April. The calendar's 来年 and the fiscal 来年度 can point at two different moments. The year-end farewell 来年もよろしく closes the turning year.

Quick check

  1. In November, what does 来年度の予算 refer to?
