Mnemonic

思う omou — a godan verb; the と of ~と思う binds the mind's words in quotation marks. "I think that ~" is a soft assertion set down one tone below fact, the essential N5 seat for handing over opinion and conjecture with care. In conversation そう思います lightly offers the hand of agreement. Kanji-reading kin: 思 reads Korean 'sa' (思考), Mandarin sī.

Quick check

  1. Express "I think it will rain" with ~と思います
