Mnemonic

おぼえる — 覚える, Yamato. An ichidan verb. The opposite of 忘れる wasureru. The kanji 覚 has 見 (to see) sitting under it ── seeing and cutting it into the mind. Tense divides the meaning ── 覚える (plain form): the act of memorizing ── 単語を覚える (memorize a word). 覚えている (the ~ている form): the state of remembering ── 名前を覚えている (I remember the name). A subtle near-pair, 思い出す omoidasu ── 'to recall, to bring back'. If 覚える cuts a memory in, 思い出す pulls a sunk memory out. Inscribing (覚える) → retaining (覚えている) → recalling (思い出す) ── the three stages of memory split into three verbs. In the onyomi かく kaku ── 覚悟 kakugo (resolve), 感覚 kankaku (sensation). Sister to the Korean reading gak.
