Mnemonic

ニュース — nyuusu, a loanword from English "news". Written in katakana. Over one field, a loanword and a Sino-Japanese word split the register ── ニュース (loanword): news as daily content. テレビのニュース (the TV news). 報道 houdou (Sino-Japanese): 報 (to inform) + 道 (way) = the formal activity of 'journalistic reporting'. Just as 新聞 was 'newly heard', the Sino-Japanese word always takes the weighty side and the loanword the everyday side. 速報 sokuhou (breaking news): 速 (fast) + 報 (inform) ── the urgent news that runs as an on-screen ticker. Over one event: ニュース handles it lightly, 報道 weightily, 速報 urgently ── Japanese tunes the temperature of news by origin and kanji. The Korean readings bodo / sokbo are sister to the onyomi ほうどう / そくほう.
