Mnemonic

ねる — 寝る, Yamato. An ichidan verb. The kanji 寝 shows a person lying down under a roof (宀) — 'lying down inside a house'. One verb carries two beats — the act of falling asleep: 早く寝る (to go to bed early). the state of lying / sleeping: 寝ている (to be asleep / to be lying down). Sleep itself and the entry into sleep share one word; the ~ている auxiliary splits them. With its partner 起きる okiru (to wake), 寝る becomes one of the two daily borders — the day ends at 寝る and opens again at 起きる.

Quick check

  1. How to say "I am sleeping" politely?
