Mnemonic

長い nagai — an i-adjective, "long," stretching through space and time alike. The opposite is 短い; long and short face off, one kanji against one kanji. Shifted into the onyomi ちょう, the kanji 長 grows from "long" into "head" — 校長 is the 長 of a school, 社長 the 長 of a company, 成長 a growing long. Kanji-reading kin: 長 reads Korean 'jang' (社長), Mandarin cháng / zhǎng.
