Mnemonic

まいとし — 毎年, a Sino-Japanese root 毎 with the Yamato reading とし. Unpack the two kanji ── 毎 (every) + 年 (year) = 'every year'. The kanji root 毎, multiplied by time units, forms a family of frequency adverbs ── 毎日 mainichi (every day), 毎週 maishuu (every week), 毎月 maitsuki (every month), 毎年 maitoshi (every year), 毎晩 maiban (every night). Learn one root, 毎, and five frequency-adverb cells fill at once ── the kanji-LEGO assembly seen in 来月 works here too. A reading trap: 年 has two voices, とし (kun) and ねん (on) ── 毎年 is まいとし (kun) in speech, まいねん (on) in formal documents and news. Both are correct; register decides. The Korean readings mae / nyeon are sister to the onyomi まい / ねん.
