Mnemonic

関係 kankei — 関 (a barrier, a gate-bolt) + 係 (to bind, to connect). The two kanji together picture "binding things together" — a relationship. 関係ない (to be unrelated) is very common in speech. It extends into 人間関係 (human relations). 関 is the shinjitai form.
