Mnemonic

授業 jugyou — 授 (to confer) + 業 (work, task): "the handing over of teaching." 授ける is a ceremonial verb — emperor and professor alike "bestow" a degree downward, while the receiving side splits off as 受ける, direction carved into the kanji. 業 is the spine of occupation — 工業, 商業, 農業, 企業. Within one classroom 出席, 欠席, 休講 gather as one household.

Quick check

  1. Natural Japanese for "conferring a degree"?
