Mnemonic

はいる — 入る, Yamato. A godan -ru verb (the look-alike trap ── 入って, 入らない, both godan). The kanji 入 is a pictograph of something slanting inward ── the motion itself drawn. The intransitive 入る pairs with the transitive 入れる ireru (to put in). The clean opposite of 出る deru (to exit) ── 入る / 出る are the two characters in 入口 / 出口 (entrance / exit). A cultural usage: お風呂に入る = 'to enter the bath = to bathe'. Distinct from 浴びる abiru (to shower) ── in Japanese bathing culture, 入る is the tub you soak in, 浴びる is the shower you stand under. The Korean reading ip is sister to the onyomi にゅう ── 入学 nyuugaku (school entry).
